New families in the Medford, Oregon area have a lot of choices to make. Many are tempted toward a minivan, like the Toyota Sienna. Others pay close attention to the LATCH ratings.
Short for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, LATCH is a system designed to take some of the frustration out of installing child seats. Traditionally, child seats were secured in the car using the safety belt system, but this method, as many parents know, can be challenging -- and you don't want to make a mistake.
In 2015, the IIHS established a rating system for LATCH hardware, and tested out 100 different new models of various makes. The results showed that most LATCH systems weren't any easier than using the seat belts.
With a year to dwell on some harsh IIHS feedback, Toyota took a stand for family safety. The new 2016 Toyota Prius was re-designed so exceptionally, it earned the rating Good+ for LATCH ease-of-use.
