A few hours to the south, in California, select drivers are finally enjoying carbon-free commutes with the Toyota Mirai.
The Mirai runs entirely on hydrogen, which is highly compressed and stored in durable carbon-fiber tanks. Its only emission is water, making it one of the cleanest fuels for combatting climate change.
"I love it, and I feel like I'm part of the solution," said Mark Mobley of Orange County. He put his name on a waiting list after taking a test drive last year, and took delivery of his new Mirai this April.
He may need to drive six miles to reach the nearest hydrogen fueling station, but the Mirai's range is up to 300 miles, and Mobley's daily commute is only about 18 miles. "I usually refuel on weekends," he said.
So far, the launch of the Mirai has been slow, due to lack of infrastructure outside of a few metropolitan areas in California. The closest fill-up station to Medford is over 200 miles away, so it may be some years before you'll find hydrogen cars in our new inventory.
