Toyota makes cars for smart drivers: safe, reliable, efficient, and affordable. It turns out the company itself is one of the smartest in the world -- at least, according to the MIT Technology Review.

Toyota ranked in at 17 out of 50 on MIT's 50 Smartest Companies of 2016 list. It and Tesla Motors were the only two automakers recognized.

The MIT tech review pointed to Toyota's mass-production of a hydrogen-fuel-cell vehicle, the Mirai, and the intensive amount of research that went into creating it. Even more promising is the Toyota Research Institute, which launched in 2016 with the goal of developing artificial intelligence, robotics, and mobility solutions.

"We're very grateful to be recognized by MIT, one of the finest educational institutions in the world," said Toyota North America CEO, Jim Lentz. "Toyota's scientists are committed to innovation and leading the way to a future of mobility that is cleaner, safer, and provides freedom of mobility for all. In the spirit of kaizen, Toyota is committed to improving every day in the service of our customers and society."
