When you think about a car that is built in America, you might expect the top contenders to be those made by American-based brands. Long, long ago, that may have been the case -- but today's automotive market is global. Even if a vehicle is assembled in the U.S., it may well be that all of its parts come from overseas.

Toyota makes cars for smart drivers: safe, reliable, efficient, and affordable. It turns out the company itself is one of the smartest in the world -- at least, according to the MIT Technology Review.

Toyota ranked in at 17 out of 50 on MIT's 50 Smartest Companies of 2016 list. It and Tesla Motors were the only two automakers recognized.
